THE MEXICAN POLITICAL SCENE:
A Work in Progress

Sr. Juan Fernando Perdomo Bueno, a deputy in the Mexican congress, presented a wide-ranging overview of Mexico's national politics today, during an address at a luncheon sponsored by the Chamber of the Americas (COA).

Deputy Perdomo, who serves as a representative of the Convergenicia NationalPolitical Party, representing his home state of Veracruz, began by saying,"I don't know everything." He made it clear from the outset that he was presenting his own view of contemporary Mexican politics, something that would have been unlikely to have taken place not all that long ago.

Perdomo, in addition to citing freedom of speech as welcome and relatively recent addition to the Mexican political scene, said that it was too early to predict who the major parties' presidential nominees will be in 2006, adding, "Mexico is in transition, and, with 50% of our people living in poverty, there is still much to do."
